Congratulations to Miriam Atria, President/CEO of Lake Murray Country on receiving the Fred Brinkman Award for demonstrating an enduring and outstanding commitment to improving tourism in South Carolina. The award is named after the longest-serving director of the (SCPRT), the South Carolina Parks Recreation and Tourism.

Atria could have been the inspiration for this award. She adores the Midlands of South Carolina, and her affection is obvious. She coined the phrase “The Jewel of South Carolina” to refer to Lake Murray and is credited with numerous firsts throughout her career.

The Lake Murray Fourth of July Boat Parade and Fireworks Spectacular was her original idea. Then, for three decades, she guided her team as that event was put together. Not only is it a celebration of America and its liberties, but it also serves as a display of the stunning Lake Murray. From its inaugural year, it has become a must-see event that everyone from SC and outside should attend.

Atria began working with CCLMC when it was just a notion. Owners of fishing lodges and marinas in the area believed Lake Murray was underused. They believed their companies could expand if Lake Murray had the appropriate supporter. They were aware that Lake Murray could become a popular tourist destination with that person in charge. Miriam Atria was the ideal candidate. She has worked to turn those corporate leaders’ ideas and aspirations into reality during her time in office. She has also introduced a lot of her own concepts into the local tourism industry, which promotes the benefits of our “Gem” all over the world.

The Forest L. Woods Bass Tournament and other top-notch fishing competitions have taken place in Lake Murray while she has been in charge. The Super Bowl of bass fishing has been held on Lake Murray. Each year, the lake also plays host to a number of renowned music festivals as well as numerous other notable occasions. All of these draw tourists who are keen to enjoy Lake Murray with them. Also, they bring cash to spend in shops. The FLW has had millions of dollars in economic impact on the Midlands during its events.

Atria has a reputation for never quitting. Many things that people claimed she couldn’t do have been accomplished by her. Never accept “no” for an answer, Miriam frequently advises her team.

The Lake Murray area has been fortunate to have her at the helm!
