Customers can submit comments, attend public hearings and weigh in on proposed utility bill credits.
COLUMBIA – South Carolina customers have several opportunities to share their opinions on a proposed merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy, including upcoming public hearings before the Public Service Commission of South Carolina.
On July 15, Dominion Energy South Carolina, Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy filed a joint petition seeking regulatory approval for the proposed business combination. If approved, Dominion Energy South Carolina (DESC) would become an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of NextEra Energy.
The companies are seeking approval from regulatory agencies in South Carolina and other jurisdictions, including Virginia, North Carolina and federal regulators. If all necessary approvals are received, the companies anticipate completing the merger in the second half of 2027.
Proposed Customer Bill Credits
Under the joint petition, the companies propose providing electric and natural gas customers with bill credits over a two-year period following the merger’s closing.
The proposed credits would be based on South Carolina’s share of the companies’ total electric energy sales in 2025. Individual customer credits would be calculated using historical consumption.
For residential electric customers, the plan is designed to provide an average credit of approximately $10 per month over the two-year period. Actual credits would vary according to individual electricity usage and appear as a separate line item on monthly bills.
Natural gas customers would receive a single bill credit, calculated twice over the two-year period following the merger’s closing. The credit would appear as a separate line item on their gas bills.
The merger and proposed credits remain subject to regulatory review and approval.
The complete proposal is available through the Public Service Commission’s case documents.
