LAKE MURRAY, S.C. — Dominion Energy has announced a seasonal drawdown of Lake Murray that began this month and is expected to continue through January 2027.
The water level will be lowered approximately 10 feet, from the full-pond elevation of 360 feet above sea level to approximately 350 feet. Lake Murray is normally maintained at about 358 feet.
The drawdown is intended to support vegetation management in the shallower coves of the lake. Aquatic vegetation can affect water quality and become entangled in the propellers of recreational boats and other watercraft. Lowering the lake level helps limit the resurgence and growth of some unwanted aquatic plants.
The last significant Lake Murray drawdown took place in 2023.
While the lake level is lowered, Dominion Energy encourages property owners to take advantage of the lower water levels to perform routine maintenance on docks and shorelines.
The timing of the lake’s return to normal levels will depend largely on rainfall and river inflows into the lake.
Dominion Energy also reminds boaters to use caution during the drawdown. Many areas of the lake will be shallower than normal, creating potential hazards for boaters and other watercraft users.
Lake Murray is a man-made reservoir covering nearly 80 square miles. The lake is approaching its 100th anniversary and remains an important recreational and natural resource for the Midlands.
