COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) and the City of Columbia will join together Friday, Aug. 7, for a proclamation ceremony honoring Purple Heart recipients and recognizing the start of Purple Heart Viola Week, which runs Aug. 7-14.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at The Nest, 930 Laurel Street, in downtown Columbia, overlooking Finlay Park. The location holds special significance as Finlay Park has been designated as South Carolina’s first Purple Heart Park.
During the event, SCDVA Secretary Todd B. McCaffrey will present an official state proclamation from Gov. Henry McMaster to the Department of South Carolina, Military Order of the Purple Heart. Columbia Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann will also present a city proclamation recognizing Purple Heart Day and honoring recipients and their families.
“South Carolina’s combat-wounded service members represent the absolute highest measure of sacrifice and selfless service in defense of our nation,” McCaffrey said. “Partnering with the City of Columbia allows us to pay proper tribute to these brave Veterans and kick off Purple Heart Viola Week. On behalf of Governor Henry McMaster and the State of South Carolina, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Military Order of the Purple Heart and all who carry the legacy of this solemn distinction.”
Rickenmann said the city is honored to recognize Purple Heart recipients and their families.
“The designation of Finlay Park as South Carolina’s first Purple Heart Park provides a meaningful place to reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have defended our nation,” Rickenmann said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to join with our Veteran community to ensure their sacrifices are remembered and honored for generations to come.”
The Purple Heart is the nation’s oldest military decoration still awarded. It was originally established by Gen. George Washington in 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit and is presented to service members wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military.
Purple Heart Viola Week is an annual observance led by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. During the week, symbolic purple viola flowers are distributed to raise awareness and support for wounded Veterans and their families.
