One of the most common mistakes beginning golfers make is improper alignment. Many players check their aim by placing a club or alignment stick along their toe line and attempting to point it directly at the target.
While that may seem logical, it can actually create problems. If your toe line is aimed directly at the target, your swing path and ball position may end up too far to the right of the intended line. For right-handed golfers, the correct setup is generally to position the feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the target line, which means they are aimed slightly left of the target.
Standing a little more open can also help golfers better visualize a swing path that approaches the ball from the inside and moves through the target.
Keep in mind that a golf ball will typically start in the direction the clubhead is traveling at impact, provided the ball is struck on the sweet spot with a square clubface. Rather than focusing solely on the ball, try visualizing the path you want the club to follow toward the target.

Developing proper alignment and swing path awareness can lead to more consistent ball striking and improved accuracy.
