Zoo seeks $5 million in donations to complete second phase of Bridge to the Wild.
COLUMBIA – Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has launched a capital campaign to raise $5 million in philanthropic support to complete the second phase of its Bridge to the Wild expansion.
Riverbanks has secured nearly $140 million in public and private funding for the project. The expansion will introduce new animal habitats, guest experiences and dining options while strengthening the zoo’s commitment to animal care and wildlife conservation.
Building on the success of the Saluda Skyride, which opened in 2025, Phase Two will offer immersive animal habitats, accessible pathways and opportunities for visitors to connect with wildlife and learn about conservation.
Planned highlights include:
-
An expanded lion habitat with more room to roam, natural elements and enrichment opportunities to support animal welfare.
-
New habitats for red pandas, Sumatran tigers, and endangered and rescued primates affected by the illegal wildlife trade.
-
A riverside restaurant overlooking the Lower Saluda River.
-
Fully accessible pathways and immersive experiences designed to encourage curiosity, connect visitors with nature and inspire conservation efforts.
“Bridge to the Wild represents a remarkable investment in the future of Riverbanks, our community, and the wildlife we work to protect,” said Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.
“This campaign gives our supporters an opportunity to help create exceptional spaces for animals, meaningful experiences for guests, and a stronger conservation resource for generations to come.”
Community members, businesses and philanthropic partners are invited to support the campaign.
