A ground breaking ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon, April 29, for the newly named Saluda Shoals Riverwalk at the Saluda Shoals Park upper boat landing.

The walkway, which was formerly known as the Lower Saluda Greenway, is a proposed 8.5 mile multi-use, non-motorized paved pathway running along the north side of the Saluda River.

Mark Smyers, Executive Director of the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission, welcomed guests and explained the impact the project will have on the communities it will serve.

“This ceremony marks the beginning of construction that, when finished, will be a crucial link between the Lexington and Irmo communities,” said Smyers. “Serving as well the Columbia, West Columbia and Cayce communities while connecting neighborhoods, recreational areas and businesses.”
