A proper stance is one of the most important fundamentals in golf. A good setup won’t guarantee a perfect shot, but it will greatly improve your chances of making consistent swings.
In the accompanying photo, notice how the stripes on the golfer’s shirt illustrate the angle of the spine, which tilts slightly away from the target. This position promotes good balance and helps create an efficient swing.
Because the right hand is positioned lower on the grip, the right shoulder naturally sits lower than the left. This allows the right arm to remain relaxed and flexible, making it easier to bend correctly during the backswing.
The shoulders should be parallel to the target line to create a square stance. Also notice that the “V’s” formed by the thumbs and index fingers point more toward the chin, placing the hands in a balanced, square position that promotes straighter golf shots.

While a perfect address position doesn’t guarantee a perfect golf shot, starting with solid fundamentals will improve your consistency and lead to better results over time.
