When’s the last time you practiced a bunker shot—or tried that high, soft flop over the trap to a tight pin? Maybe never. But somehow, we still expect to post a low score!

Let’s face it: bunkers are designed to penalize you for missing the green. But here’s a little secret from the pros—many would rather be in the sand than buried in thick rough. Why? Because with the right technique, sand and flop shots can be both controlled and consistent.

The two shots are more alike than you might think. Both require you to open the face of your wedge. This adds loft and backspin, and also activates the bounce—the curved back part of the club that helps the wedge glide through sand or grass.

Keep in mind: when you open the face, the ball will go higher, but not as far. So you’ll need to make a longer, more committed swing than usual. Don’t be shy—trust the technique.

And here’s some friendly advice: save yourself time (and golf balls) by taking a lesson from an experienced PGA professional—preferably one with some years under their belt. We’ve seen it all, and we’re trained to help you play better, smarter golf.

Give me a call—I’d love to help you take your short game to the next level.
