Not a creature was stirring, except the awesome delivery drivers. Many people receive the majority of their package deliveries this month, and even more so in 2020. And thieves know that means an easy payday.
Over the next few weeks, deputies are conducting extra patrols in your neighborhoods looking for package thieves.
It is reported that 1.7 million packages go missing every year, and 1 in 3 people report having a delivery stolen from their doorsteps (C+R Research).
Do you fear package theft? Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself from porch pirates:
– Install security cameras facing your front porch/walkway/driveway.
– Keep your doorway/walkway clear and your property well-lit.
– Not home? Have neighbors you trust grab your packages. Or better yet, have your deliveries sent to a friend’s house.
– Sign up for tracking and delivery alerts so you know where/when your package is expected.
– Use lockers or ship-to-store when available. Can you have your deliveries sent to your workplace?
– Have your mail and packages held by the postal service if you expect to be away from your home for an extended period of time.
– Can packages be seen from the street? Consider a large plant to hide deliveries. Instruct driver to use the hiding spot.
– If your delivery service offers scheduled deliveries, opt for times when you will be home.
– Bring your packages in as soon as they’re delivered.
– Request your deliveries require a signature if available. Ask if they can come in nondescript packaging.
If you think your package may have been stolen, contact the company it has been shipped from for updates. Then contact us to file a report. Save any camera footage or signs of theft for our investigators.
Taking these steps helps reduce the opportunities for thieves to steal the magic of the holidays from your family and friends.
