HOPKINS, S.C. – Nature lovers, mark your calendars! Congaree National Park has announced the dates for its 2025 Synchronized Firefly Viewing Event, set to take place May 14 – 21. This mesmerizing display of bioluminescence draws thousands of visitors each year to witness fireflies flashing in perfect harmony.

How to Attend

Due to high demand, passes will be required for entry on event nights and will be distributed through a lottery system on Recreation.gov. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Lottery Opens: April 3 at 10 a.m. EDT

  • Lottery Closes: April 9 at 10 a.m. EDT

  • Lottery Fee: $1 non-refundable service fee

  • Pass Cost (if selected): $19 event fee (total cost: $20)

  • Pass Notifications: Sent to applicants on April 16

  • Pass Limit: 145 vehicles per night

  • Vehicle Requirements: Standard passenger vehicles only (no RVs, trailers, or buses)

Pass holders will be allowed entry between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on their designated night. The pass is valid for one-time use only and is non-transferable.

What’s New for 2025?

Congaree has made a few modifications this year to enhance the visitor experience while protecting the firefly habitat:

Better Timing: Event dates have been scheduled to align with peak firefly synchronization, increasing the chances of optimal viewing.
Lower Fees: The event fee has decreased by $5, with red-lens flashlights provided to guests for borrow and return to reduce light pollution.

Park Closures & Restrictions

To protect the delicate firefly habitat, several areas of the park will close daily at 4:30 p.m. during the event period. These include:

🚫 Harry Hampton Visitor Center, Boardwalk, and Hiking Trails
🚫 Bannister Bridge Canoe Launch
🚫 Cedar Creek (Bannister Bridge to South Cedar Creek Canoe Launch)
🚫 Longleaf and Bluff Campgrounds
🚫 No Backcountry Camping Permits will be issued during the event.
