If I could go back more than 70 years, to when I first took up golf, I wish I hadn’t learned to putt with my wrists! My pro — and just about everyone else back then — used their wrists when putting and chipping. Some, like my pro, did quite well with it.
Over the years, though, the game has evolved toward a stiffer-wristed, shoulder-driven stroke. The idea is simple: your shoulders don’t get as nervous or twitchy under pressure like your fingers and hands can.
Today’s photo shows a legal way to help eliminate wrist movement. While it’s illegal to anchor the putter to your body, you can lock it along your forearm using a long putter — as long as it doesn’t extend past your elbow. It works!
If you’re struggling on the greens or looking for new options, give it a try. Long putters are designed to be more upright in lie angle and easier on your back. Experiment — and spend more time on the putting green. That’s where strokes are saved!
