If you’re looking for a consistent short game shot with minimal risk, the Chip and Run is a great go-to for senior golfers. This shot is easy on the body and highly reliable when executed with proper fundamentals.
Here’s how to keep it simple and effective:
Club Choice: Use a 6 iron for this shot to keep the ball low with a predictable roll.
Stance and Setup:
-
Favor your front foot with your weight.
-
Keep your feet close together to promote control.
-
Set your hands slightly ahead of the ball.
The Swing:
-
No wrist action – let your arms and shoulders do the work.
-
Think of it like a long putt: the clubface stays square, and you maintain the natural loft of the 6 iron.
-
The motion is short, smooth, and controlled – less moving parts means more consistency.
The Roll:
Most of the shot’s distance comes from the roll. Read the green like a putt, because it will act like one once it lands.
Bonus Tip:
Don’t forget — putting from off the green is allowed! If the fringe is smooth and the grass is short, putting might be your best percentage play.
With just a bit of practice, this shot will become a trusty tool in your bag. Remember — keep it simple, and let the club do the work!
Happy chipping!
