It appears a pair of Lexington County schools are searching for two new basketball coaches for next season.

A report Tuesday morning indicated boys basketball coach Carlos Powell was not returning to Gray Collegiate Academy. This was the former University of South Carolina forward’s first season with the War Eagles.

Powell replaced Dean Bethea, who led Gray Collegiate to six state titles during his tenure. The War Eagles went 19-8 this past season, winning the Region 5-4A title, but losing in overtime to North Augusta in the third round of the Class 4A Lower State playoffs.
Powell previously served as boys basketball coach at alma mater Wilson. He led the Tigers to the 2022 Class 4A title.

Gray Collegiate principal Brian Newsome said the school would provide an official release“ if/when something official occurs” and there was nothing official at this time. Attempts to reach Powell were unsuccessful.

River Bluff High School did confirm Tuesday the resignation of girls’ basketball coach Candace Cobb. She spent five seasons with the Lady Gators, posting a 49-69 record.

This past season, River Bluff went 0-10 in the newly expanded Region 4-5A.
