Columbia, SC — Chris and Samantha Lacroix, owners of CrossFit Soda City, organized a special tribute workout on May 18 to honor J. Michael Muller, a member of the Irmo Fire District, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on May 26, 2023.
The event saw a turnout of 20 firefighters and 38 gym members, who gathered to commemorate Muller’s service and sacrifice. Among them was David, a fellow firefighter and gym member, who was present at the scene on the day of the tragedy and assisted in the recovery of Muller from the burning building.
“As veterans, Samantha and I understand the pain of losing teammates,” said Chris Lacroix. “I served in the Army for decades and know how much it means to people and an organization when their loved ones are remembered and honored.”
The workout, designed by Samantha in collaboration with David, featured functionally demanding movements common in the firefighting profession. The workout structure was symbolic: a 11710-meter movement distance representing Engine 171, and 5 rounds of 26 reps commemorating Muller’s passing on May 26, 2023.
The Lacroixes submitted the workout to CrossFit Headquarters, aiming to have it recognized as a “Hero WOD,” a workout of the day that honors fallen first responders or military members who died in the line of duty. “Our hope is to host this tribute workout each year to continue to honor Muller,” said Chris Lacroix. “CrossFit headquarters can nominate it as an official ‘Hero WOD’ in the CrossFit community and allow Muller’s legacy to live on in communities worldwide.”
