Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were called to the Extended Stay America Hotel off of Lake Murray Blvd on Friday morning after US Marshalls had attempted to serve a warrant on a wanted fugitive from Georgia.
George Curtis opened fire on the officers and two US Marshalls were wounded in the lower extremities. Both marshalls are expected to recover from their wounds. Curtis was wanted by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in Augusta, Georgia for child rape, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery and child molestation.
Curtis died at the scene after turning his weapon on himself.
Law enforcement agencies that responded included Richland County Sherriff’s Department, SLED, Columbia Police Department and the US Marshalls.
