One Columbia for Arts and Culture has announced Larry Andrew Hembree as the 2026 recipient of the Stephen G. Morrison Visionary Award, recognizing his leadership, creativity, and lasting contributions to the region’s arts community.
The award ceremony will take place March 20 from 6:30–8 p.m. at the Koger Center for the Arts, where artists, community leaders, and supporters will gather to celebrate Hembree’s impact on Columbia’s cultural landscape.
The Stephen G. Morrison Visionary Award honors individuals whose innovation, dedication, and passion for the arts have significantly enriched the cultural vitality of the community. Hembree’s career as an artist, educator, administrator, and nonprofit leader reflects the spirit of the award.
He currently serves as Executive Artistic Director of the Inclusive Theatre Company of South Carolina, where he works to make the arts accessible to all. Through this role, he has expanded opportunities for performers of all abilities to share their talents on stage.
Over the years, Hembree has held several key leadership positions, including:
- Executive Director of the Nickelodeon Theatre
- Managing Director of the Trustus Theatre
- Director of Development and later Executive Director of the Columbia Children’s Theatre
- Director of Performing Arts at the South Carolina Arts Commission
Through these roles, he has helped shape the region’s performing arts ecosystem, strengthen nonprofit arts organizations, and inspire both artists and audiences.
Beyond his professional achievements, Hembree is also known as a dedicated advocate and community connector. He has served on numerous boards and arts initiatives, including the Jasper Project, Congaree Vista Guild, Arts Access SC, and One Columbia for Arts and Culture.
“Larry has spent his career lifting others through the arts,” said Donavan, president of One Columbia for Arts and Culture. “His vision, generosity, and tireless dedication have shaped Columbia’s creative community in immeasurable ways. He truly embodies the spirit of the Stephen G. Morrison Visionary Award.”

His work has left an indelible mark on our community, and we are honored to celebrate his legacy.”
