The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) is set to break ground on the highly anticipated Saluda Shoals Riverwalk at 2 p.m. on April 29, at the Upper Boat Landing of Saluda Shoals Park.

Formerly known as the Lower Saluda Greenway, this ambitious project will create an 8.5-mile paved, multi-use path along the north side of the Lower Saluda River, enhancing regional connectivity and promoting active transportation between Lexington, Irmo, Columbia, West Columbia, and Cayce.

“This groundbreaking marks a new chapter in connecting our communities through safe, accessible, and enjoyable outdoor spaces,” said Mark Smyers, ICRC Executive Director.

A Path Toward Connectivity and Wellness

The Riverwalk will link neighborhoods, businesses, and recreational areas while offering a scenic route for walking, biking, and outdoor enjoyment. It also reflects strong community advocacy for safe, non-motorized pathways and healthier lifestyles.

“This Riverwalk will not only make it easier for people to access parks and trails but will also contribute to the long-term quality of life for residents,” Smyers added.

Key Partnerships

The Riverwalk’s development is powered by collaboration with community partners including:

  • Dominion Energy

  • Central Midlands Council of Governments

  • County of Lexington

  • Cornerstone Presbyterian Church

  • Midlands Business Leadership Group

  • State of South Carolina

  • The Mungo Foundation

Dominion Energy is playing a particularly vital role, with 95% of Phase One running across its property—from Lake Murray Dam to Saluda Shoals Park.

“We are proud it continues today with yet another transformational partnership of environmental stewardship and accessibility within the communities we serve,” said Keller Kissam, Dominion Energy South Carolina President.

The Riverwalk is a landmark step in fostering sustainable growth, community connection, and environmental appreciation along the beautiful Lower Saluda River.
