SWANSEA – A new mural is bringing color and community pride to Swansea as part of the “Do Beautiful Things” campaign led by Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB).
The mural—located at 570 W. 2nd Street—is the first in a planned series across Lexington and Richland Counties. It’s a collaborative effort between KMB, the Town of Swansea, and the all-female artist group Girls Who Paint. Funding for the artwork comes from grants provided by Keep America Beautiful and PalmettoPride.
Each mural in the series will be designed to welcome visitors with imagery inspired by local and state symbols. The goal is to create eye-catching backdrops for photos while also promoting community pride and litter prevention.
According to a nationwide study by Keep America Beautiful, 81 percent of litter is intentionally discarded, but people are less likely to litter in areas that are clean and attractive. KMB believes public art can play a powerful role in making communities feel cared for—and that pride leads to cleaner streets.
“Beautification is a tactic of litter prevention, and art can change a community in a positive way,” said Sarah Lyles, Executive Director of PalmettoPride.
To celebrate the mural’s installation, a community litter cleanup is planned for Thursday, July 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. Volunteers will receive supplies and refreshments from Keep the Midlands Beautiful. A ribbon cutting ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m., where the mural will be officially unveiled. All are welcome to attend.
