The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) has announced plans to begin issuing newly redesigned driver’s licenses, beginner’s permits, and identification cards this fall. The updated credentials will feature stronger materials and enhanced security features aimed at protecting South Carolinians from identity theft and fraud.
The new design will incorporate advanced laser engraving technology and high-security printing techniques, making the cards significantly more resistant to counterfeiting. Alongside improved security, the cards will proudly showcase South Carolina imagery, including the Palmetto Tree and the State House.
“This change modernizes the way we produce licenses and ID cards,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “Most importantly, it will better protect residents from identity fraud while providing more reliable credentials for law enforcement and retailers.”
As part of the transition, the SCDMV will also centralize the production of all credentials—a process already in place in over 45 states. Under this new system, customers will still visit a DMV office to apply or renew in person, but they will receive a temporary paper certificate valid for driving, voting, and other identification needs while their permanent card is mailed to them within 7 to 15 business days.
Existing licenses and ID cards will remain valid until their listed expiration dates. Those approaching renewal are encouraged not to wait until the last minute, as mail delivery will take some time. Customers will still receive renewal reminders by mail 90 days before expiration.
More information about the new card design and security enhancements will be released in the coming months. To learn more, visit www.scdmvonline.com.
