MYRTLE BEACH, SC – For only the second time, the “Mr. South Carolina Football” Award was given to a Northeast athlete.

Richland Northeast quarterback Will Wilson received the top honor Saturday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium. It was presented during halftime of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl.

Wilson, who was selected to the Shrine Bowl but opted to practice with his future college North Carolina State, was in attendance in Myrtle Beach to receive the award.

“I dream of it a lot,” Will Wilson said. “It’s a blessing. It’s a blessing to be in this position.”
Despite missing two games following knee surgery, Wilson threw for 2,482 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,144 yards and 20 touchdowns and finished his career with 11,080 all-purpose yards and 119 total touchdowns.

Wilson also led the Cavaliers to back-to-back playoff appearances. He joined Blythewood quarterback Richard Mounce as “Mr. South Carolina Football” winners from the Northeast area and sixth from the Midlands.

“The biggest thing is he’s always telling me if you put the work in, it will come out on the other side,” Head coach/father Walt Wilson said. “You know it’s like when you put money in the bank. You can go in and get it and his work is just like money in the bank that draws interest. The withdrawal was today.”
