The Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church’s United Methodist Men (UMM) will host their 52nd annual BBQ fundraiser this Saturday, October 5, starting at 8 a.m. on the church campus at 3050 Leaphart Road in West Columbia.

Since its inception in 1971, when it began as a fundraiser to support the church’s building fund, this event has evolved into one of the largest community gatherings in the area. Originally cooking 10 pigs for sale at the Pineview Ruritan Hut, the event has grown significantly over the years, raising over $540,000 for various mission projects and barbecuing more than 192,000 pounds of pork and 16,000 chickens.

Preparation for the BBQ begins weeks in advance, with volunteers assembling to split firewood, build the pit, and cook the meat over two days. On the day of the event, volunteers work from early morning hours to prepare and serve the food. Last year’s event saw around 775 barbecue plates, 1,130 pounds of chopped pork, and 350 chicken halves sold in just six hours.

Proceeds from the event help fund local and state mission projects, including donations to the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, Salkehatchie Summer Service, and various youth scouting and church programs. Last year alone, the BBQ raised over $31,000 for these causes.

“The UMM BBQ is a massive effort supported by the entire church, with hundreds of volunteers coming together to make it happen,” said Troy Blalock, UMM president. “It’s a rewarding experience to be able to support so many mission projects that benefit our community.”

Mark your calendars for this year’s BBQ, and come out to support a longstanding West Columbia tradition while enjoying delicious food for a good cause!
