IRMO<\/strong> – Lexington-Richland School District Five’s Adult Education program has received high praise from the South Carolina Department of Education following a recent compliance monitoring review, with state officials recognizing the program’s leadership, student achievement, and commitment to helping adult learners succeed.<\/p>\n

In its final report, the Compliance Monitoring team commended Adult Education Director Dr. John McMillan<\/strong> for his leadership and dedication to the program.<\/p>\n

“The Compliance Monitoring team wishes to commend Dr. John McMillan for his efforts and hard work to lead Lexington-Richland Five Adult Education,” the report stated, noting the strong support he receives from the program’s staff, the District Five Board of Trustees, board leadership, and Superintendent Dr. Akil E. Ross Sr.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The state review highlighted several strengths of the district’s Adult Education program, including exceptional support from Lexington-Richland School District Five and recognition from the South Carolina Office of Career Readiness. Reviewers also praised the program’s dedicated teachers and staff for maintaining high expectations while building meaningful relationships with students.<\/p>\n

Student performance was another area of distinction. The report noted the program exceeded state performance standards in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, while continuing to surpass state standards in ABE during the 2024-25 school year.<\/p>\n

State officials also recognized the program’s positive learning environment, individualized student support systems, and innovative communication strategies that include social media, email, text messaging, and digital applications to help students stay engaged and on track.<\/p>\n

The monitoring team cited the program’s strong partnerships with Midlands Technical College, Vocational Rehabilitation, Walgreens, and SC Works, which provide students with expanded educational, workforce, and career opportunities. Sound financial management, accurate recordkeeping, flexible class schedules, and a comprehensive intake and orientation process also received favorable reviews.<\/p>\n

The report further noted the important role of staff members and College and Career Navigators in helping students develop pathways to earn a high school diploma or GED, obtain workforce certifications, and prepare for career advancement.<\/p>\n

“This report reflects the dedication of our Adult Education team and their unwavering commitment to helping every student succeed,” Superintendent Dr. Akil E. Ross Sr.<\/strong> said. “We are incredibly proud of Dr. McMillan, our teachers, and staff for creating a program that not only exceeds state standards but also transforms lives by opening doors to education, employment, and lifelong success.”<\/p>\n
