COLUMBIA<\/strong> – The South Carolina Philharmonic<\/span><\/span> will conclude its Capital Concert Series with its season finale, From the New World<\/em>, on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Koger Center for the Arts<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The performance marks the finale of the orchestra’s 61st season and will feature a program centered on themes of journey, heritage and home.<\/p>\n

The concert’s title comes from Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”<\/em> by Antonín Dvo\u0159ák<\/span><\/span>, one of the most recognized works in classical music, inspired by the composer’s impressions of America. Also on the program is Appalachian Spring Suite<\/em> by Aaron Copland<\/span><\/span>, known for its distinctly American sound and sense of optimism.<\/p>\n

Opening the evening is Umoja – Anthem of Unity<\/em> by contemporary composer Valerie Coleman<\/span><\/span>. The piece, named after the Swahili word for “unity,” blends elements of call-and-response and rhythmic energy in a work that emphasizes connection and community.<\/p>\n

A highlight of the concert will be a side-by-side performance featuring members of the Philharmonic alongside the South Carolina Philharmonic Youth Orchestra<\/span><\/span>, showcasing young musicians performing with professionals.<\/p>\n

The event is part of the Philharmonic’s “Your Brain on Art” season and is supported in part by the City of Columbia, Richland County and the South Carolina Arts Commission<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n
