Philharmonic Celebrates America’s 250th Anniversary<\/strong><\/p>\n

The South Carolina Philharmonic<\/span><\/span><\/strong> will launch its celebration of America’s 250th anniversary with a special concert event, “The Dream of America,”<\/strong> on March 14.<\/p>\n

The performance blends orchestral music and theater, featuring masterworks, a world premiere and a staged symphony highlighting the immigrant experience.<\/p>\n

At the heart of the program is Ellis Island: The Dream of America<\/span><\/span><\/strong> by composer Peter Boyer<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. The work combines actors and orchestra to tell true stories of immigrants arriving in the United States. Acting for the production is directed by Chad Henderson<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, while the orchestra will be conducted by Philharmonic Music Director Morihiko Nakahara<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The concert also features a double-bill of music by Maurice Ravel<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, including Alborada del gracioso<\/em> and the famed orchestral piece Boléro<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Another highlight of the evening will be the world premiere of Wind Across a Cloudless Firmament<\/em> by composer Shaosheng Li<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, performed by internationally acclaimed Chinese soprano Gong Shuang<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The performance is part of the Philharmonic’s Season 61 Capital Concert Series, “Your Brain on Art.”<\/strong> Tickets range from $27 to $71 and are available at scphilharmonic.com or by calling the Koger Center for the Arts<\/span><\/span><\/strong> box office at 803-251-2222, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
