Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is kicking off 2026 with the arrival of two young African lions, the return of Free Fridays for local residents, and a full lineup of events and experiences designed to connect guests with wildlife throughout the year.<\/p>\n
“From meeting lion brothers Pesho and Sidai to exploring larger-than-life LEGO sculptures and going behind the scenes with sea lions, there’s something wild in store for every guest,” said Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. “2026 is all about giving our community more reasons to connect with wildlife and with one another.”<\/p>\n
The Zoo recently welcomed Pesho (Pesh-O) and Sidai (Seed-I)<\/strong>, 3-year-old male African lions born at Lincoln Park Zoo. The brothers arrived December 3 as part of Riverbanks’ ongoing participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP)<\/strong>, which promotes genetic diversity and healthy populations of lions in human care.<\/p>\n Pesho and Sidai are the grandcubs of Zuri<\/strong>, who passed away last year, and Thabisa<\/strong>, who, along with her sister Lindelani, recently transferred to Oregon’s Wildlife Safari through the SSP.<\/p>\n As part of the Zoo’s Bridge to the Wild expansion<\/strong>, construction will begin in 2026 on a state-of-the-art lion habitat. This Valentine’s Day, guests can symbolically adopt a flamingo. Each adoption includes a pink flamingo plush, a personalized message, and the joy of supporting Riverbanks’ animals. The program goes live in mid-January at riverbanks.org<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On display through February 20<\/strong>, this traveling exhibit features larger-than-life LEGO sculptures celebrating the beauty of nature. Included with daytime admission or membership, the exhibit explores gardening, ecosystems, and the intersection of art and wildlife in the Botanical Garden.<\/p>\n
March 10<\/strong> – A specially designed experience for guests with sensory sensitivities, including adjusted sound levels, designated quiet areas, and visual supports.<\/p>\n
