{"id":8010,"date":"2026-01-19T18:36:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T18:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gpstrianglenews.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/19\/riverbanks-roars-into-2026-with-new-lions-free-fridays-and-exciting-seasonal-events\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T18:36:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T18:36:19","slug":"riverbanks-roars-into-2026-with-new-lions-free-fridays-and-exciting-seasonal-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpstrianglenews.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/19\/riverbanks-roars-into-2026-with-new-lions-free-fridays-and-exciting-seasonal-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Riverbanks Roars into 2026 with New Lions, Free Fridays, and Exciting Seasonal Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"256\" data-end=\"502\">Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is kicking off 2026 with the arrival of two young African lions, the return of Free Fridays for local residents, and a full lineup of events and experiences designed to connect guests with wildlife throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"863\">&ldquo;From meeting lion brothers Pesho and Sidai to exploring larger-than-life LEGO sculptures and going behind the scenes with sea lions, there&rsquo;s something wild in store for every guest,&rdquo; said Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. &ldquo;2026 is all about giving our community more reasons to connect with wildlife and with one another.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"868\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"913\"><strong data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"913\">Riverbanks Welcomes Pesho and Sidai<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"1269\">The Zoo recently welcomed <strong data-start=\"940\" data-end=\"977\">Pesho (Pesh-O) and Sidai (Seed-I)<\/strong>, 3-year-old male African lions born at Lincoln Park Zoo. The brothers arrived December 3 as part of Riverbanks&rsquo; ongoing participation in the <strong data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1185\">Association of Zoos and Aquariums&rsquo; Species Survival Plan (SSP)<\/strong>, which promotes genetic diversity and healthy populations of lions in human care.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1467\">Pesho and Sidai are the grandcubs of <strong data-start=\"1308\" data-end=\"1316\">Zuri<\/strong>, who passed away last year, and <strong data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1360\">Thabisa<\/strong>, who, along with her sister Lindelani, recently transferred to Oregon&rsquo;s Wildlife Safari through the SSP.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1469\" data-end=\"1794\">As part of the Zoo&rsquo;s <strong data-start=\"1490\" data-end=\"1522\">Bridge to the Wild expansion<\/strong>, construction will begin in 2026 on a state-of-the-art lion habitat. Once complete, Riverbanks plans to welcome several females to form a pride with one of the males, providing guests close-up views of the lions and opportunities to learn more about their conservation.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1796\" data-end=\"1799\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1801\" data-end=\"1830\"><strong data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"1828\">Free Fridays Return<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"2101\">Every Friday in January and February 2026, residents of <strong data-start=\"1887\" data-end=\"1922\">Richland and Lexington counties<\/strong> can enjoy free daytime admission by showing proof of residency, such as a driver&rsquo;s license, property tax statement, utility bill, or vehicle registration, at any ticket window.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2103\" data-end=\"2106\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2148\"><strong data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2146\">Special Experiences and Events<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2435\"><strong data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2190\">Wild Parent Valentine&rsquo;s Day Adoption<\/strong><br data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2193\" \/>This Valentine&rsquo;s Day, guests can symbolically adopt a flamingo. Each adoption includes a pink flamingo plush, a personalized message, and the joy of supporting Riverbanks&rsquo; animals. The program goes live in mid-January at <strong data-start=\"2414\" data-end=\"2432\">riverbanks.org<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2437\" data-end=\"2736\"><strong data-start=\"2437\" data-end=\"2459\">Sea Lion Backstage<\/strong><br data-start=\"2459\" data-end=\"2462\" \/>Participants can go behind the scenes at <strong data-start=\"2503\" data-end=\"2523\">Sea Lion Landing<\/strong>, help keepers prepare the morning diet, and join animal care staff on deck for a training demonstration.
