This week, we&rsquo;re focusing on the <strong data-start=\"276\" data-end=\"303\">left arm (the back arm)<\/strong> during the backswing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"327\" data-end=\"514\">Most golfers have heard the classic advice: <em data-start=\"371\" data-end=\"403\">&ldquo;Keep your left arm straight.&rdquo;<\/em><br data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"406\" \/>However, many interpret this as keeping the arm <strong data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"463\">stiff<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"467\" data-end=\"477\">locked<\/strong>, which actually restricts the swing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"516\" data-end=\"533\">Here&rsquo;s the key:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"722\">\n<li data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"625\">\n<p data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"625\"><strong data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"576\">Using the bicep contracts the muscle<\/strong>, which <em data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"594\">shortens<\/em> the arm and bends the elbow.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"626\" data-end=\"722\">\n<p data-start=\"628\" data-end=\"722\"><strong data-start=\"628\" data-end=\"680\">The tricep is what actually extends the left arm<\/strong>, pushing the hand away from the shoulder.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"967\">A proper golf swing is circular, and to generate speed &mdash; and therefore distance &mdash; the swing arc should be as wide as possible.
