A little awareness goes a long way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"670\" data-end=\"696\"><strong data-start=\"674\" data-end=\"696\">Safe shopping tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"1104\">\n<li data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"794\">\n<p data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"794\">Thieves often target people who are alone. Shop with a friend or family member when possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"795\" data-end=\"865\">\n<p data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"865\">Let someone know where you&rsquo;re going and when you expect to return.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"866\" data-end=\"1007\">\n<p data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"1007\">Keep cash in a front pocket instead of in a purse or wallet. Carry your keys in a pocket so you can still get home if your bag is stolen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1104\">\n<p data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1104\">If you don&rsquo;t feel comfortable walking to your vehicle alone, ask store security for an escort.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1106\" data-end=\"1275\">Koon noted that financial fraud crimes tend to rise between Thanksgiving and the end of the year as shoppers move quickly from store to store and spend more time online.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1372\">&ldquo;During the holidays, it&rsquo;s easy to get distracted&mdash;and that&rsquo;s when criminals strike,&rdquo; Koon said.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1374\" data-end=\"1419\"><strong data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1419\">Credit and debit card protection tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1804\">\n<li data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1521\">\n<p data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1521\">Watch your card every time you use it and put it away immediately after completing a transaction.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1522\" data-end=\"1587\">\n<p data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1587\">Never write your PIN on your card or store it in your wallet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1635\">\n<p data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1635\">Don&rsquo;t leave cards or receipts lying around.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1707\">\n<p data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1707\">Shield your card number from anyone nearby who might photograph it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1754\">\n<p data-start=\"1710\" data-end=\"1754\">Carry only the cards you need for the day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1804\">\n<p data-start=\"1757\" data-end=\"1804\">Shred paperwork that includes your card number.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1806\" data-end=\"1886\">Gift cards also remain a popular target for criminals during the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1888\" data-end=\"2045\">&ldquo;Gift cards are easy to buy and easy to give, and that makes them attractive to thieves,&rdquo; Koon said. &ldquo;A few extra seconds of caution can protect your money.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2047\" data-end=\"2078\"><strong data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2078\">Gift card purchase tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2079\" data-end=\"2493\">\n<li data-start=\"2079\" data-end=\"2171\">\n<p data-start=\"2081\" data-end=\"2171\">Purchase gift cards only from businesses you know and trust; avoid online auction sites.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2172\" data-end=\"2277\">\n<p data-start=\"2174\" data-end=\"2277\">Read the terms and conditions before buying. Look for fees tied to purchase, shipping, or inactivity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2278\" data-end=\"2391\">\n<p data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2391\">Check that protective stickers are intact and codes have not been exposed.
