LEXINGTON, S.C. – As the holiday shopping season reaches full swing, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is reminding shoppers to stay alert and take simple precautions to avoid becoming victims of theft or fraud.<\/p>\n
“This time of year always brings concerns about safety,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Crowded stores, packed parking lots, and the rush to finish gift buying can make you an easy target for someone looking to steal your money, your merchandise, or your identity. A little awareness goes a long way.”<\/p>\n
Thieves often target people who are alone. Shop with a friend or family member when possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Keep cash in a front pocket instead of in a purse or wallet. Carry your keys in a pocket so you can still get home if your bag is stolen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
If you don’t feel comfortable walking to your vehicle alone, ask store security for an escort.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Koon noted that financial fraud crimes tend to rise between Thanksgiving and the end of the year as shoppers move quickly from store to store and spend more time online.<\/p>\n
“During the holidays, it’s easy to get distracted—and that’s when criminals strike,” Koon said.<\/p>\n
Watch your card every time you use it and put it away immediately after completing a transaction.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Never write your PIN on your card or store it in your wallet.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Don’t leave cards or receipts lying around.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Shield your card number from anyone nearby who might photograph it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Carry only the cards you need for the day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Shred paperwork that includes your card number.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Gift cards also remain a popular target for criminals during the holiday season.<\/p>\n
“Gift cards are easy to buy and easy to give, and that makes them attractive to thieves,” Koon said. “A few extra seconds of caution can protect your money.”<\/p>\n
Purchase gift cards only from businesses you know and trust; avoid online auction sites.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Read the terms and conditions before buying. Look for fees tied to purchase, shipping, or inactivity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Check that protective stickers are intact and codes have not been exposed. Report damaged cards to the store.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Give recipients the original receipt so they can verify the purchase if the card is lost or stolen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
