{"id":7662,"date":"2025-09-24T16:45:50","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T16:45:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gpstrianglenews.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/24\/rapid-shelter-columbia-permanently-houses-100th-resident\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T16:45:50","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T16:45:50","slug":"rapid-shelter-columbia-permanently-houses-100th-resident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpstrianglenews.com\/index.php\/2025\/09\/24\/rapid-shelter-columbia-permanently-houses-100th-resident\/","title":{"rendered":"Rapid Shelter Columbia Permanently Houses 100th Resident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"209\" data-end=\"365\">Rapid Shelter Columbia has reached a major milestone, celebrating the placement of its 100th resident in permanent housing since opening in November 2022.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"367\" data-end=\"707\">&ldquo;As we celebrate housing our 100th resident, I&rsquo;m incredibly proud of my team and the dedication they bring to this work,&rdquo; said Kameisha Heppard, Director of Homeless Services. &ldquo;Housing an individual is just the beginning &mdash; our commitment extends to ensuring each person has the resources and support they need to thrive in the community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"1015\">The first project of its kind in the Southeast, Rapid Shelter Columbia provides up to 50 unsheltered residents at a time with their own private space, bed, and storage. Residents also receive wraparound services addressing health needs, substance use disorders, employment, benefits enrollment, and more.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1315\">&ldquo;At its inception, Rapid Shelter Columbia was launched to be a program of impact,&rdquo; said City Manager Teresa Wilson. &ldquo;These benchmarks demonstrate success, one individual at a time, and showcase impact and sustainability. I am very thankful to our staff and partners for such purpose-driven work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1362\"><strong data-start=\"1317\" data-end=\"1360\">Program Impact (as of August 22, 2025):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1363\" data-end=\"1677\">\n<li data-start=\"1363\" data-end=\"1414\">\n<p data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1414\">431 individuals admitted, including 31 veterans<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1442\">\n<p data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1442\">74 individuals employed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1478\">\n<p data-start=\"1445\" data-end=\"1478\">73 enrolled in health insurance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1479\" data-end=\"1539\">\n<p data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1539\">12 Social Security Disability Insurance benefits secured<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1573\">\n<p data-start=\"1542\" data-end=\"1573\">60 non-cash benefits obtained<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1574\" data-end=\"1615\">\n<p data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1615\">1,034 referrals to community partners<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1640\">\n<p data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1640\">128,235 meals served<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1677\">\n<p data-start=\"1643\" data-end=\"1677\">101 residents permanently housed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1984\">Residents #100 and #101 moved into permanent housing within a 24-hour period, underscoring the program&rsquo;s momentum. Many participants face complex challenges: 44% live with mental health conditions, 34% with substance use disorders, 28% with physical disabilities, and 29% with chronic health conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2126\">Beyond shelter, residents participate in wellness workshops, gardening, and community outings, building stability during their transition.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2482\">Columbia has seen steady progress against homelessness. From 2007 to 2024, the Columbia\/Midlands region reported a 9.3% decrease in its unsheltered population, compared to an 18.8% decline statewide.
