I urge all donors to stay alert and make sure their money goes where it&rsquo;s truly needed.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"710\" data-end=\"918\">A fire department in Kerr County assisting with flood recovery reported that scammers created a fake Venmo account using its name. This caused its real account to be temporarily suspended, delaying donations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1120\">&ldquo;After natural disasters, criminals move fast to take advantage of people&rsquo;s kindness,&rdquo; Hammond said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s critical for donors to research before giving, especially when emotions are high.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1146\">Tips for Safe Giving<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1257\">Hammond&rsquo;s office shared several tips for anyone considering a donation to flood relief or other disaster aid:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"2397\">\n<li data-start=\"1259\" data-end=\"1459\">\n<p data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1459\"><strong data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1294\">Choose experienced charities.<\/strong> Give to organizations that have a proven track record in responding to disasters. These groups usually have the resources and systems in place to provide real help.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1721\">\n<p data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1721\"><strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1486\">Do your homework.<\/strong> Make sure the charity is registered and allowed to collect donations in South Carolina. Be wary of vague requests like &ldquo;help Texas flood victims&rdquo; without naming a specific charity.
