Lexington County Councilman Darrell Hudson has been honored as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year by the South Carolina Councils of Governments.<\/p>\n

Hudson serves as Chair of the Central Midlands Area Agency on Aging’s Regional Aging and Disability Advisory Committee (RADAC), where he has been a strong advocate for improving the safety of seniors across the Midlands.<\/p>\n

His work was sparked by a personal tragedy in 2019, when his mother went missing from an assisted living facility in Lexington County. The facility lacked security cameras, and Hudson later found his mother outside with a head injury. Shocked to learn that state law does not require cameras in nursing homes, Hudson took action.<\/p>\n

He began pushing for legislation that would require cameras at all entrances and exits of senior care facilities. In 2020, Hudson helped pass a resolution urging the state legislature to adopt these camera requirements. In October 2024, the Central Midlands Council of Governments Board of Directors passed a similar resolution, and several local municipalities have since joined the cause.<\/p>\n

Hudson’s leadership and persistence continue to bring awareness and legislative momentum to senior safety throughout South Carolina.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
