{"id":2197,"date":"2019-07-16T20:32:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T20:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gpstrianglenews.com\/?p=2197"},"modified":"2019-07-16T21:00:42","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T21:00:42","slug":"kids-get-free-admission-during-space-week-at-the-state-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gpstrianglenews.com\/index.php\/2019\/07\/16\/kids-get-free-admission-during-space-week-at-the-state-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Kids get free admission during Space Week at the State Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In\ncelebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the South\nCarolina State Museum is offering free general admission to kids 12 and younger\nduring Space Week, July 20 through July 28. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nweeklong event is sponsored by Boeing. Guests will get to discover the museum\u2019s\nnewly renovated 13,000 square foot space gallery, complete with a\nstate-of-the-art, 360 degree, interactive digital globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n360 degree digital globe or \u201cMagic Planet,\u201d is a focal point in the new\ngallery. Guests will be able to interact with the globe, using it to see\nplanets, galaxies, watch videos, answer questions and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nwanted to take this iconic moment in history to showcase the museum\u2019s ability\nto engage each guest with a multidimensional presentation of South Carolina\u2019s\ninfluence in the Apollo missions and bring a piece of the universe back to\nearth,\u201d said Willie Calloway, executive director of the South Carolina State\nMuseum. \u201cThe globe itself is a fascinating piece of technology that will\ncaptivate our audience with an interactive display of space, earth science,\nweather and more. I\u2019m excited for our guests to experience this new addition to\nthe State Museum.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nSpace Gallery also features a new meteorite display with specimens that\nrepresent shattered asteroids, pieces of the moon, and even small fragments\nfrom&nbsp;Mars.&nbsp;The meteorites were&nbsp;collected from all over the world\nincluding, Australia, Africa, Asia and South Carolina. They are billions of\nyears old and some of have never been on display before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also\nprominently featured in the gallery is a new replica of NASA\u2019s Mars Curiosity\nRover. The Rover, located on a recreated Mars surface and panoramic backdrop,\nis a partnership between the University of South Carolina\u2019s School of\nEngineering and Computing and the State Museum. In this area guests will learn\nabout the mission of the Curiosity Rover and other missions to Mars as well as\nsee large, high definition photos of the Mars surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nApollo 50: Journey to the Moon exhibit is also a part of the museum\u2019s new Space\nGallery. The new exhibition charts the history of NASA\u2019s Apollo space program\nand South Carolina\u2019s role in lunar exploration. Guests will be able to sit in a\nmade to scale Apollo Lunar Rover and see a collection of Apollo space program\nartifacts and&nbsp;a moon rock.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apollo\n50: Journey to the Moon also includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022\nA replica Apollo Lunar Rover used for astronaut training guests can sit in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022\nA collection of artifacts from Charles Duke\u2019s Apollo 16 mission including: a\n\u201crock box\u201d used by Duke to collect moon samples, a cuff check list, a\nchronograph, Duke\u2019s Apollo training flight suits, his helmet and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022\nA large scale reproduction of the Saturn V rocket\u2019s Instrument Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022\nS.C. Space Heroes Gallery &#8211; Here guests will learn about Apollo 16 astronaut,\nCharles Duke and other notable South Carolinians who contributed to the Apollo\nprogram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Space\nWeek will be full of activities from planetarium and 4D shows like Fly Me to\nthe Moon, to hands on activities throughout the museum and evening events like\nMystery Moon Theater Live.
