As one of the largest single donations to a nonprofit cause in\nthe company\u2019s history, it reflects Dominion Energy\u2019s commitment to the people\nof South Carolina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the $2.5 million donation,\nDominion Energy has pledged $25,000 to provide 1,000 charter memberships to the\nmuseum for individuals and families served by the Charleston Promise\nNeighborhood, which provides educational programming to underserved students.\nThese charter memberships will ensure access to the museum for residents that\nhave traditionally encountered barriers to educational opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are fortunate to have Dominion Energy as a\nleader here in Charleston and across South Carolina,\u201d said Joseph P. Riley,\nJr., IAAM board member and former Charleston mayor. \u201cDominion Energy is holding\ntrue to its promise to expand meaningful corporate giving by providing\nsubstantial support to the museum and, in turn, broadening critical access to\neducational opportunities. Today, we thank Dominion Energy for helping to bring\nthe longtime dream of the International African American Museum closer to\nreality.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominion Energy\u2019s leadership investment will\nbe recognized in the South Carolina: Power of Place gallery. One of the\nmuseum\u2019s most hands-on, interactive galleries, the exhibit will feature a\nHeritage Map, which is an interactive multimedia table featuring a large-scale\nmap of South Carolina. Visitors can use the touchscreen installation to engage\nwith the state\u2019s history through highlighted people, events, sites, themes and\nlandscapes \u2013 illustrating the power of place and of African American\nexperiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEducation is one of Dominion Energy\u2019s core\nfocus areas, and we are excited that the International African American Museum\nwill provide invaluable learning opportunities for people of all ages and\nbackgrounds,\u201d Rodney Blevins, president and CEO of Dominion Energy\u2019s\nCayce-based Southeast Energy Group, said. \u201cWe are pleased to support this\nuniquely rich learning and cultural environment that features\ntechnology-driven, engaging experiences that can be enjoyed by many here\nlocally as well as visitors from across the country and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Boulware Moore, IAAM president and\nCEO, said Dominion Energy\u2019s $2.5 million leadership investment will give museum\nvisitors a chance to examine African American history and culture through the\nlens of South Carolina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe South Carolina: Power of Place gallery is\na prime example of the way that we can make history more personal, relatable\nand accessible by using regional stories to represent national and\ninternational narratives,\u201d Moore said. \u201cSouth Carolina featured a Black\npopulation majority by the early 1700s, and the influence of African Americans\nand their ancestors remains ubiquitous and robust in the state. That is what\nmakes South Carolina\u2019s past so rich and representative of African American\nhistory.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominion Energy Chairman, President and CEO\nThomas F. We look forward to\nsustaining our support of South Carolina through charitable giving and economic\ndevelopment as we provide safe, reliable energy with excellent customer service\nfor years to come.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly half of all enslaved Africans forced to\nAmerica through the Transatlantic Slave Trade arrived in Charleston, and the\nvast majority disembarked at Gadsden\u2019s Wharf, the future home of the\nInternational African American Museum (IAAM) and one of the most significant\nand sacred sites of the African American experience in the Western hemisphere.\nThe IAAM, a museum, memorial and site of conscience, will present unvarnished\nhistory and culture, commemorate and celebrate the foundational role that\nAfricans and their descendants played in the making of America, and highlight\ntheir diasporic connections around the world.
