COLUMBIA — From scenic shorelines to expansive park systems, the Capital City/Lake Murray Country region is highlighting its wide range of outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages.
Anchored by Lake Murray—often referred to as “the Jewel of South Carolina”—the region spans Lexington, Newberry, Richland and Saluda counties, offering year-round access to recreation and natural beauty. The 41-mile-long lake, with more than 650 miles of shoreline, provides ample space for fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming and lakeside relaxation.
One of the most popular destinations on the lake is Dreher Island State Park, which stretches across three islands and features trails, picnic areas and some of the region’s top fishing spots. The park remains a favorite for both locals and visitors seeking a mix of activity and tranquility.
Beyond the lake, the Midlands offers a diverse network of parks and outdoor spaces. In downtown Columbia, Finlay Park provides a relaxing urban greenspace, while Congaree National Park offers a more immersive nature experience with its elevated boardwalks winding through one of the nation’s most unique old-growth bottomland hardwood forests.
Families can explore Sesquicentennial State Park, a 1,400-acre park featuring a 30-acre lake, walking and biking trails, picnic areas and a dedicated dog park. Closer to Irmo, Rawls Creek Park continues to grow as a community hub with amenities such as a skate park, open green space and walking paths.
Sports fans can also enjoy the region’s entertainment offerings by catching a Columbia Fireflies game at Segra Park. The ballpark, located in the BullStreet District, has earned national recognition and provides a family-friendly atmosphere throughout the season.
Whether it’s hiking wooded trails, paddling calm waters or enjoying a night at the ballpark, Lake Murray Country offers a blend of recreation and relaxation that continues to draw visitors from across the region.
In addition to its outdoor appeal, the area features a growing culinary scene, with a mix of Southern staples, local cafés, breweries and waterfront dining options. Visitors can explore dining and attractions or plan their trip through the Lake Murray Country Visitors Center, located at the historic Lorick Plantation House on North Lake Drive.
With ongoing investments in parks, trails and community spaces, Capital City/Lake Murray Country remains a premier destination for outdoor adventure in the heart of South Carolina.
