COLUMBIA & GREENVILLE – Prisma Health has launched the Sickle Cell Lifespan Center, a newly expanded program designed to provide comprehensive care for patients with sickle cell disease from childhood through adulthood.

With dedicated clinics in Columbia and Greenville, the center expands access to advanced treatments, supported by a $2 million investment from the State of South Carolina. The Midlands expansion now offers disease-modifying medications, blood transfusions, clinical trials, and individualized pain management strategies.

“Prisma Health is leading the way with a lifespan model of sickle cell disease care—one of the few programs of its kind in the nation,” said Dr. Alan Anderson, who leads the Upstate program. “This model ensures continuity and individualized treatment throughout a patient’s life.”

Patients like Alvonte Pyles, diagnosed at age two, say the consistent care has been life-changing. “I can most definitely count on my doctors and the staff here. They’ve known me since I was very little . . . This program has put me on a trajectory to better living.”

The multidisciplinary team includes physicians, social workers, psychologists, and nurse navigators. Prisma Health is also enhancing inpatient consultative services, ensuring continuity between hospital and outpatient settings.

The Columbia clinic is located at 3010 Farrow Road, Ste. 300A. To schedule an appointment, call 803-434-6100.

According to the American Society of Hematology, an estimated 4,500 South Carolinians live with sickle cell disease, which disproportionately affects people of African descent.
