LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has received new underwater sonar devices to assist in search and rescue operations on Lake Murray, thanks to a $16,000 grant from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation.

During a March 11 ceremony at Bundrick Island, Dominion Energy South Carolina President Keller Kissam presented Sheriff Jay Koon with two handheld sonar devices. These devices emit sonic pulses up to 165 feet, providing enhanced visibility underwater, even in murky conditions, to aid emergency search and recovery efforts.

Sheriff Koon expressed appreciation for the donation, emphasizing its role in keeping Lake Murray’s 50,000-acre waters safe. “Strong relationships between public safety and the private sector make Lexington County special,” said Koon.

Dominion Energy supports the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s marine patrol unit, which operates year-round to ensure safety on the lake. “We’re proud to support their work by donating this advanced technology which can act as their eyes underwater during an emergency,” said Kissam.

Dominion Energy serves 3.6 million electricity customers in Virginia and the Carolinas, as well as 500,000 natural gas customers in South Carolina. Through its charitable foundation, Dominion Energy donated $46.3 million in 2024 to support human needs, environmental protection, education, and community development.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation works to bridge the gap between governmental funding and the department’s needs, raising private funds for equipment, materials, and community programs that enhance public safety.
